On 19 May 2019, Google decided to terminate all business dealings with Huawei involving the transfer of hardware and software, except those covered by open source licences. This means that devices manufactured after this date will not have Google services such as the Play Store, although they will have the equivalent, the Huawei App Gallery.
Since then, we at EMMA have been working to adapt our SDK to the Huawei App Store in order to measure attribution as well as to allow Push Notifications to be sent through their service. In this way, the measurement of these users will not be lost. You can see more information about the SDK implementation here.
In addition, we have also worked on a filter to differentiate between devices using Google services (Google Mobile Services - GMS) and those using Huawei services (Huawei Mobile Services - HMS). You can check this filter from the explorer section, but you should be aware of the following considerations:
- The filter differentiates between devices using HMS services and devices using GMS services.
- It is possible that non-Huawei branded devices may be leaked as HMS. This can happen because if a user has a Samsung, Xiaomi or any other manufacturer's device and a Huawei smartwatch, in order to use the Huawei smartwatch, they need to install HMS services on their device, which will then be categorised as HMS.
- Huawei branded devices prior to the termination of the relationship between Google and Huawei have both Google Play and App Gallery stores, but it is currently not possible to know from which store the user has downloaded the app. So there is a possibility that there are devices categorised as HMS because they have Huawei services that may have downloaded the app from App Gallery.
